TN Bills Encourage Parental Involvement

Tennessee is among the few other states that have enacted or are proposing legislation aiming to push parents to get more involved in their children’s school performance.  One bill advancing in the Tennessee legislature encourages school districts to develop a parental involvement contract, while another proposes what are commonly called parent report cards.  According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, the contract legislation is similar to a Michigan proposal passed in 2001, and Louisiana is also considering legislation to grade parent participation.  Tennessee Governor Bil

Commonwealth Attorney Mark Blankenship on Kentucky's "Stand Your Ground" Law

The so called “stand your ground” law cited in the media recently as justification for the killing of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin is under scrutiny now. Kentucky has a similar law. Where essentially someone could use deadly force against a person who is threatening their life. To help shed more light on this law in Kentucky Chad Lampe spoke with Commonwealth Attorney Mark Blankenship. He serves Calloway and Marshall Counties.

Kentucky Lane Restrictions

A lane restriction begins tomorrow for work on the US 60 Ledbetter Bridge. Crews will work through April 13th to install a deck expansion as part of ongoing repairs to the bridge.  Highway officials say delays will be less than five minutes. Traffic on Interstate 69 will also see lane restrictions in Caldwell County starting Monday April 9.

Canaan Returning to MSU for Senior Year

Murray State point guard Isaiah Canaan says he'll return for his senior year after leading the Racers to their best season in school history. Coach Steve Prohm confirmed Canaan's decision to stay today to The Associated Press. Prohm says Canaan decided to return to school after information they gathered showed him as a late first round or early second round pick in the upcoming NBA draft. Canaan, a second-team AP All-American, averaged 19 points for Murray State last season.

Lexington Police Release Letters from Former Governor Nunn to Son

Lexington Police have released documents chronicling a murder investigation that ended in a guilty plea from the son of former Governor Louie B. Nunn.  The 191 pages includes a 1997 letter from the former governor to his son Steve Nunn saying quote "within my mind and memory, you do not exist.”  Nunn pleaded guilty in June to the September 2009, shooting death of 29-year-old Amanda Ross. He had been engaged to Ross. Nunn is serving life in prison without parole. The documents include interviews with family and friends describing the couple's volatile relationship.

Hopkinsville Men Convicted for Pill Trafficking

Two Hopkinsville men will serve prison time for trafficking prescription drugs from Florida to Kentucky. Circuit Judge Andrew Self sentenced 24-year-old Cary Alder and 26-year-old Scotty Highsmith to ten and fifteen years respectively. The two men are suspected of transporting more than 3,000 Oxycodone pills by mail.  27-year-old Peter Nibert of Pasco County, Florida was also convicted in connection to the case.
