Legislator Proposes to Raise Wine Limits

By Dan Conti

Frankfort, KY – State Senator Damon Thayer believes small wineries in Kentucky should be allowed to double their production. The Republican testified today before the Interim Joint Committee on Licensing and Occupations. He says the Commonwealth currently has limits on the amount of wine those small farms can produce.

"Currently the cap is at 50,000 gallons a year and my proposal is to raise that cap to 100,000 gallons a year. We are seeing tremendous growth in the winery industry in Kentucky."

Thayer says Kentucky should let the free market determine how many gallons of wine a farm can turn out. There are at least four locally-owned wineries in western Kentucky.
