[Audio] Murray State Puts on Play Adaptation of 'Frankenstein' This Week

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

This week, the Murray State University Department of Theatre will put on a showing of the classic "Frankenstein." Director Daryl Phillipy speaks with Tracy Ross on Sounds Good about how he’s adapted the classic work.

Phillipy says the adaptation comes from a dramatization of Mary Shelley’s novel by R.N. Sandberg. It stays faithful to the original, and includes modern elements. The production features five actors playing one or more roles each.

Visuals and spectacle play a large part of the experience, with special detail paid to storytelling to create an immersive stage. The director also says themes of love and rejection come through in the script.

He hopes audiences come away with an understanding of diversity and how to reconcile differences.

The performance opens Thursday night at Robert E. Johnson Theater on Murray State’s campus. For tickets, visit murraystatetickets.com or call the MSU theater office.

Tracy started working for WKMS in 1994 while attending Murray State University. After receiving his Bachelors and Masters degrees from MSU he was hired as Operations/Web/Sports Director in 2000. Tracy hosted All Things Considered from 2004-2012 and has served as host/producer of several music shows including Cafe Jazz, and Jazz Horizons. In 2001, Tracy revived Beyond The Edge, a legacy alternative music program that had been on hiatus for several years. Tracy was named Program Director in 2011 and created the midday music and conversation program Sounds Good in 2012 which he hosts Monday-Thursday. Tracy lives in Murray with his wife, son and daughter.
