After Wet Vote, Mayfield Will Grant Four Packaged Sales Licenses

publicdomainpictures.net

Now that Mayfield residents have voted to allow alcohol sales within city limits, those interested in establishing a liquor store have to wait 60 days before they can apply for a license.

Toward the end of August, an ad will be published in the local newspaper advertising the opportunity. Mayfield City Clerk and ABC Administrator Tamie Johnson said prospective applicants shouldn’t fill out any forms until then because the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s licensure application is changing on July 15.

Johnson said the city will award only four packaged sales business licenses.

Mayfield City Councilman Phil Myers, who was one of the leaders of the effort to allow alcohol sales, said the council will now get to work crafting a city alcohol ordinance. Myers said the council is looking to model Mayfield's ordinance on the city of Danville's, which he says has been hailed as one of the best and most complete in the state.

Myers said alcohol will likely show up in Mayfield convenience stores first, sometime soon after the 60-day waiting period.
