Playhouse in the Park Director Lisa Cope talks with Austin Carter on Sounds Good about the Penguin Project's production of Peter Pan, Jr. running through August 28.
This is the organization’s third year to participate in The Penguin Project. Started by Dr. Andrew Morgan in Peoria Illinois, the project makes theater accessible to kids with disabilities. Murray’s Playhouse in the Park is the 7th theater in the nation and the only theater in Kentucky to participate in the program.
Kids, called Arists, are matched with peer mentors who provide on-stage support. Cope says the preparation process leading up to performance is similar to that of other productions but rehearsals are shortened and spread over a period of 4 months. This year’s Penguin Project group will perform Peter Pan, Jr. Cope says the cast includes 20 Artists and 20 mentors.
Playhouse in the Park is holding auditions September 5 and 6 for its production of The Addams Family. On September 9 the organization will hold its second Bourbon Tasting fundraiser at the Murray Country Club with spirits from Wild Turkey Bourbon and Silver Trail Distillery.
