Reports of funny money have been spotted by businesses in both Mayfield and Murray in the last week. The Mayfield and Murray Police Departments have each been made aware of at least one counterfeit $100 dollar bill in their precinct.

Murray Police Sgt. Brant Shutt says Mayfield’s spotting has raised awareness. FNB Bank Manager Angelique Jones says their Mayfield branch has reported counterfeit $100, $20 and $5 dollar bills have been reported recently.

“Most counterfeit bills are going to feel more like paper, but if you feel your actual money it won't feel like a piece of paper because it's made of cotton, not actual paper,” says Jones.

Anyone who thinks they might have a counterfeit bill can go to their local bank to check. Jones says any business that does turn in phony money will be at a loss for that amount.

“Most of the time it's going to be $20 bills that will be counterfeit. We don't see usually a whole lot of $100 dollar bills or $5 dollar bills. But I would always check out for it anytime you are dealing with cash,” says Jones.

Those who feel they might have counterfeit bills are encouraged to notify their local police as well.
