A conference next week at Murray State will demonstrate how cyber security issues could affect local business owners.
Michael Ramage is director of the MSU Center for Telecommunications Systems Management. He said the ‘Security Matters’ conference has garnered attention because small businesses often make the mistake of putting cybersecurity on the backburner.
“If you’re a small business that’s just starting up, you only have so much money, so much time, so much energy. Security is-and technology in general for that matter-is often viewed as a cost, not something that is going to provide benefit.” Ramage said.
Ramage said email phishing scams and other seemingly small hacking threats can still be very deceptive and cause businesses harm. Applied Network Defense and Rural Technology Fund founder Chris Sanders discuss alleged Russian and CIA hacking. Former hacker Ryan Green will describe how hackers choose a target. The conference begins at 8 a.m. on April 27. Registration is encouraged.
