An effort to standardize teacher evaluation across all public schools in Kentucky is being undertaken at the state capital. House Education Committee Chair Carl Rollins says there are 174 different school districts and 174 different teacher evaluation strategies. His bill requires the State Department of Education to create one standard system. He says,
“The whole purpose of this is so we can better inform our teachers and guide their professional development. We know that the most important thing we can do for our students is to have a highly qualified teacher in the classroom.”
A veteran school administrator and the head of Kentucky’s teachers union both say the aim is to foster improvement in instruction. Gallatin County School Superintendent Dorothy Perkins says it’s a coaching-mentoring model. Kentucky Education Association President Sharron Oxendine believes this system could highlight needed areas of improvement with resources to make those changes
