Twenty-eight rail cars filled with debris from demolition of part of the Department of Energy’s Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant site have been delivered to Energy Solutions in Clive, Utah. 1,920 tons of steel beams, plates, piping and equipment removed from a metals reduction plant in February were sent to the radioactive waste disposal facility 80 miles west of Salt Lake City. The first five cars left Paducah July 15th and the last shipment arrived in Utah August 8th.
DOE Paducah project manager Rob Seifert said removing the remaining demolition waste from one of the most contaminated structures on site is a major step towards cleanup. The seven-story metals plant was used to manufacture uranium metal during the Cold War. It is the first uranium processing facility at the PGDP site to undergo full-scale demolition.
