The Paducah City Commission is receiving a grant for bicycle education and safety.

The Paula Nye Memorial Grant provides funds for an after school program that will also offer equipment including helmets and lights. The Parks Department is organizing the eight week program.

City planner Steve Ervin says some of the grant will also be used to promote the newly extended Greenway Trail.

“Education about our Greenway Trail and how utilization of that Greenway Trail can promote healthy lifestyles,” Ervin said.

Since the completion of an underpass under US 45 the Greenway Trail stretches 4.5 miles from Stuart Nelson Park to the expo center. Development along the riverfront includes plans to extend the trail to downtown.

“When we complete this portion of it we will be four and a half miles of Greenway Trail that will connect downtown by the expo center all the way to Stewart Nelson Park,” parks director Mark Thompson said in July.  “I think it provides a healthy atmosphere.”
