The US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge over Kentucky Lake will be closed Tuesday to allow crews to place the main span of the new bridge.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet contractors will begin placement of the 5.1 million pound truss at 7 a.m.

The bridge closure from Aurora to the western entrance of Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area will last up to 24 hours.

Boat traffic through the area will also be halted for up to 48 hours.

Motorists traveling Murray to Cadiz will need to detour via Interstate 24 and the Purchase Parkway, which will add about 40 minutes to the trip.

KYTC spokesman Keith Todd equates the placement of the steel structure to a space shuttle launch: to place the 550 ft-long structure, winds will need to be at less than 10 miles per hour.  As of Monday afternoon, winds are forecasted at 8 miles per hour.

The placement will take about 8 to 12 hours.
