McConnell Wants U.S.-Led International Military Coalition against ISIS

U.S. Congress

Kentucky’s Senior Senator wants the U.S. to lead an international military coalition against the group known as the Islamic State.

Republican Mitch McConnell says America’s European and Arab allies should provide the bulk of the troops for such a campaign. "We will provide the leadership, we will provide the high-tech weaponry, we will provide special operations. But we're going to do this together, and we're going to take down ISIL in their caliphate."

McConnell says establishing buffer zones for those fleeing the violence in Syria would help alleviate the flood of refugees impacting America’s allies. "We already have large refugee camps in Jordan and in Turkey, and you're seeing the destabilization occurring in Europe as a result of these refugee flows."

A recent New York Times analysis shows the Islamic State is responsible for about 1,200 deaths outside Iraq and Syria.
