A federal magistrate judge will not make an immediate decision on whether to stop transgender students at an Illinois school from using girls’ locker rooms and restrooms.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert says he plans to issue a report with his recommendation to U.S. District Court Judge Jorge Alonso. But it wasn’t clear when that would happen.
The injunction request stems from a lawsuit filed by conservative groups on behalf of dozens of parents of students at Palatine-based Township High School District 211 in a Chicago suburb. They say federal authorities forced the district to adopt a policy that tramples on the privacy rights of other students.
Classes in Illinois started Monday.
One transgender student at William Fremd High School drew attention to the issue last year when she complained to federal education officials for being denied access.
