During the month of February League of Women Voters Chapters across the country are celebrating the non-partisan organization’s 100th birthday.  A League Day of Action was recognized last week at the state capitol.

The capitol rotunda event included song from the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Chorus.

Louisville’s Beverly Moore joined the League of Women Voters some 50 years ago.  In addition to raising awareness about the importance of voting and keeping up with government activities, Moore says in 1969 there was an environmental focus on strip mining.  She hopes the League is vibrant a hundred years from now. “This country as a whole has got to realize that we have all got to be involved and know what’s going on or we’re going to lose our democracy,” noted Moore.

Moore says the League is far from a female only organization.  She says the first male member came in 1971.
