Hopkins County Vaccine Shortage

By Angela Hatton

Madisonville, KY – The Hopkins County Health Department has put plans on hold to vaccinate school children against the H1N1 virus. The Health Department received fewer swine flu vaccines than expected. Nursing Director Denise Baldwin says the latest allocation is only 200 doses. Baldwin says the county previously received 600 of the nasal spray doses and 500 of the injectable version. The county's population is nearly 46-thousand. The limited number of swine flu vaccines reflects trends toward a national shortage. Baldwin says pregnant women and health care workers are the county's priority targets right now. She says they don't have enough for other high risk groups like those with asthma. She hopes soon to have enough to also offer clinics for K to twelve students.
