Clarksville, TN – The Clarksville City Council struck down a proposed amendment yesterday that would have granted individual members the same access to city department heads that the council as a whole retains. The measure would have overruled a mayoral policy that routs requests through the mayor's office. Ward 5 Councilwoman Candy Johnson proposed the amendment, claiming her constituents had an easier time getting information than she did. According to the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle, the policy was originally established in response to council members' requests for hundreds of documents. Mayor Johnny Piper defended the policy, saying his department heads should only have to answer to him.
