NRC Monitors Honeywell Progress

By Angela Hatton

Metropolis, IL – Representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will likely continue to monitor the Honeywell nuclear fuel plant for several more days. NRC Spokesman Joey Ledford says two inspectors are on site in Metropolis to watch as temporary workers producing uranium hexafluoride, or UF-6. Ledford says the inspectors are experienced nuclear engineers. The plant restarted production Saturday. Honeywell spokesman Peter Dalpe says the plant is putting out UF-6. He says the company hopes to produce at levels that meet or exceed output before the work stoppage. The company's 220 union workers have been locked out since the end of June when their contract expired. Contract negotiations are ongoing.
