No New Area Code in Western Kentucky

By Rebecca Feldhaus

Murray, KY – The Kentucky Public Service Commission has vacated a decision to make a new area code in western Kentucky. PSC Spokesman Andrew Melnykovych says after a change in policy granted by the Federal Communications Commission, the code switch wasn't necessary. After lowering the minimum numbers sold at one time, fewer numbers were wasted. Melnykovych explains.

"We are not going to run out of numbers in area code 270. And as a result of that, the commission decided rather than drag this thing on even longer, the sensible thing to do at this point would be to vacate that earlier decision to split area code 270."

He says the area code studies have been going on for close to ten years. The would-be new area code, 364, would have been applied to the south western parts of the state, including Paducah, Murray and Madisonville.
