HIV/AIDS Clinic Eyes Slim Budget Next Year

By Angela Hatton

Paducah, KY – Paducah's HIV-AIDS clinic is worried about decreased funding next year. Heartland Cares Executive Director Sue Fenske says the clinic had to cut three jobs this year due to a lack of federal and state dollars. She says the clinic now has money to fund salaries, but not supplies or programs. Heartland Cares is seeking private grants and donations to fill the gap. Fenske predicts as provisions of the federal healthcare bill go into effect, it will mean less money for non-profit healthcare organizations. Heartland Cares treats a little less than 400 patients at its clinic, and provides social services for HIV positive people in 45 counties in western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
