Piper Hiring Questioned

By Angela Hatton

Clarksville, TN – Tennessee state lawmakers may soon seek an attorney general's opinion on the Clarksville Power Board's hiring of out-going mayor Johnny Piper. Three local state legislators are looking into the hiring, and plan to announce whether they will seek an attorney general's opinion in the next few weeks. The Power Board interviewed Piper this week and hired him as the Department of Electricity Lightband Superintendent. The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle reports the decision is drawing criticism because Piper appointed all the current board members. City law prevents the mayor from taking such a position for a year after leaving office. The Power Board attorney argues an earlier state law supersedes city regulation.
