Anti-Bullying Bill Passes House EDU Committee

By Stu Johnson

Frankfort, KY – Three gay students testified about their experiences with bullying. Bradley Kaufman attends the University of Louisville. "Many of my teachers had probably never met someone who is l-g-b-t before so they don't know what to do with it it's not stated that they have to protect those students," said the former Casey County High School student.

Several committee members expressed concern about bullying but indicated current law should address the issue. Among them was representative Ben Waide of Madisonville. "No one should be in an unsafe environment and it's up to adults to supervise," said Waide.

The bill now goes on to the full house. Anti-bullying legislation was first proposed after a series of fatal shootings at public schools. Bullying was linked to some of the shootings, including a 1997 attack in Paducah that killed three students.
