Frankfort, KY – Despite a nearly $70 million surplus, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says he will implement a sixth planned furlough day for executive branch employees. Beshear confirmed the furlough day Saturday. Beshear implemented the furlough days, which were approved by the legislature, to save about $24 million from the state budget. He says the next fiscal year, which starts July 1, will still be tight. But he says if the state gets to the point where they feel comfortable about it, eliminating furloughs would be one of the first things looked at.
