Metropolis Begins Cleanup, Sandbags a Concern

By Jacque Day

Metropolis, Ill. – As floodwaters recede along southern Illinois, and federal and state officials assess flood damage, Metropolis residents begin cleanup. Sandbag removal is a primary concern. Citizens may take sandbags to the site of the old UCC Plant behind the City's Dog Pound. Citizens unable to haul their own sandbags to the UCC site may place them on the right-of-way adjacent to the curb. Mayor Billy McDaniel's office asks, please do not place sandbags in street, gutters, adjoining ditches, or on top of water shut-off valve boxes. City crews could take several weeks to remove them. The Metropolis mayor's office says, assistance is available for flood cleanup and debris removal.
