Frankfort, KY – It's back to court Thursday for Marathon Petroleum, which has been accused of gasoline price gouging in Kentucky. Attorney General Jack Conway is seeking a restraining order against Marathon, which is accused of illegally hiking gas prices during a state of emergency.
"Keep in mind, this is a monopoly in many parts of the state. They have 100 percent of the supply in significant portions of our state. They're the dominant supplier. They're very adept at raising their prices and bringing them down slowly in a way that maximizes their profits. They can't maximize in that fashion, based on speculation, during a time of an emergency order."
Marathon says the accusations are false and Conway is just using the case to benefit his re-election campaign. Conway, who had no opposition in Tuesday's Democratic primary, denies it. Conway faces Republican Todd P'Pool in November.
