Bowling Green, KY – Both of the Iraqi nationals facing terrorism charges in Kentucky have waived their rights to detention hearings. Dan Modlin covered developments in federal court in Bowling Green this morning and files this report.
23 year old Mohaned Shareef Hamadi had already waived his detention hearing a few hours before the one scheduled for Waad Ramadam Alwan was cancelled this morning. There were more reporters than defendants or attorneys on hand in the federal courthouse when the announcement came that Alwan had waived his hearing. The purpose of a detention hearing is to determine whether someone facing federal charges should be held without bail while the case is pending. The two defendants in the case were indicted late last month on 23 counts related to their alleged attempts to send cash and weapons to a group they believed to be Al Qaeda in Iraq. If convicted of all counts, both could face life in prison.
