Clarksville, TN – Clarksville's Public Safety Committee has learned changes may be needed in the city's red-light camera contract with Reflex Traffic Systems. The state legislature passed new rules for the cameras taking effect July 1st. At issue is a part of the law banning tickets for failing to stop before turning right on red. Clarksville's cameras currently activate on rolling right turns. This would require new cameras costing around $75 thousand. According to the Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle, city attorney Lance Baker says there's some legal question as to whether the new rules apply to existing contracts. If so, Redflex would be required to install new cameras at their expense. Redflex says the bill's sponsors intended existing contracts to be grandfathered in. However, there's no language to that effect in the measure that passed. The committee has decided to delay a vote on any changes until next month.
