Fort Massac Recovers from Flooding

By Todd Hatton

Metropolis, IL – Despite May's record-level flooding, Fort Massac in Metropolis, Illinois still stands over the river that could have destroyed it. According to the Paducah Sun, only a few inches of dry ground kept the reconstructed fort from becoming part of the Ohio River. Fort Massac State Park employee Anastasia Atkinson says water completely filled the trenches surrounding the structure, but didn't get any higher than the embankment the fort sits on. Atkinson says the state park's camp ground received the most damage. 37 of the 50 campsite electric boxes had to be replaced. Atkinson says park staff is working on repairing flood and non-flood related damage before the annual Fort Massac Encampment in October.
