Bridge Closed for Repair Collapses After Rainfall

By Associated Press

Mayfield, KY – A western Kentucky bridge that has been closed since flooding in April has collapsed. The bridge carried KY 1241 over Mayfield Creek near Melber. It was damaged by earlier flooding and then heavy rain over the weekend caused swift water in the creek that brought it down, according to The Paducah Sun. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet closed the bridge on April 25. Inspectors found scouring beneath a bridge pier and the initial plan was to repair the 84-year-old bridge. A cabinet spokesman says it is now beyond repair. Replacement is likely to take between one and three years.
