Frankfort, KY – The chairs of Kentucky's House and Senate local and state government committees differ on whether there should be a special session of the legislature to redraw House, Senate and Congressional districts. Republican Senator Damon Thayer.
"I personally don't favor a special session. I feel like this can be done in early January during the regular session of the General Assembly, as it was ten years ago. We've got the rest of the interim to work on the maps. Remember, there'll be three maps that we'll have to ultimately approve."
Democratic Representative Mike Cherry of Princeton prefers a special session.
"Kentucky has a relatively early filing deadline, in comparison to some states. I have no problems whatsoever with doing it in a special session. Of course, that would require us to still reach an agreement in advance."
Cherry and Thayer both point out that only the Governor has the authority to call a special session. Kentucky must restructure its voting districts in accordance with population data from the 2010 Census.
