Kentucky Begins Self-insuring Vehicles

By Todd Hatton

Murray, KY – Kentucky officials say a self-insurance program for state-owned vehicles should save the Commonwealth $750,000 a year. The program took effect Saturday for 12,500 vehicles and pieces of equipment. They were previously insured through private companies. Governor Steve Beshear's office says the state is already self-insured for fire and tornado coverage, health insurance and worker's compensation insurance for public employees. Finance Secretary Lori Flanery says the estimated savings is based on historical accident reporting and claims compared to past premiums.
