Crane Hunting in Kentucky Nears Final Step

By Todd Hatton

Murray, KY – A Kentucky legislative subcommittee has approved a regulation allowing the hunting of sandhill cranes in the Commonwealth. If the measure wins final approval, Kentucky would become the first state east of the Mississippi River in a hundred years where the birds can be hunted. Environmentalists and bird enthusiasts object to the practice that won Administrative Regulation and Review subcommittee approval Tuesday. Two other legislative committees also must approve the regulation, but no opposition is expected. Sandhill cranes were nearly extinct in the early 1900s because of overhunting, but officials say the populations have rebounded. The hunt is expected to begin December 15th and last 30 days or until the harvest of 400 cranes. Hunters have until November 30th to apply for a permit.
