Murray, KY – Kentucky's junior US Republican Senator Rand Paul plans to offer a resolution today blocking newly adopted regulations aimed at curbing power plant pollution. The EPA regulations, adopted in July, require power plants in 27 states to reduce smokestack pollution crossing state lines, creating smog and soot problems downwind. Bordering states have complained about the pollution and the billions of dollars they spend combating related illnesses. Republicans claim the EPA regulations will kill jobs and harm the economy. Paul is invoking the Congressional Review Act, a rarely-used tactic requiring a simple majority for a measure to pass the House. The White House has threatened to veto the measure, saying it would undermine the nation's commitment to clean energy.
