Veterinary financial aid deadline approaches

By Rose Krzton-Presson

Murray, KY – A shortage of large animal veterinarians in Kentucky has prompted the Kentucky Farm Bureau to offer incentives to boost numbers in the field. The KFB Education Foundation administers an incentive program in which recipients can receive up to $18,000 to go towards their outstanding student loans. KFB President Mark Haney says eligibility requirements are few and apply to many of today's graduates.

"They have to come out of veterinary school with a loan and the other thing is, they have to spend a certain percentage of their time treating large animals; and that has to be verified and documented."

Haney says the demand for all kinds of veterinarians in Kentucky is high, but most graduates are working with small animals. The deadline for 2012 applicants seeking the incentives is December 1st. For more information on this program, visit www.kyfb.com.
