Government Watchdog Concerned about Redistricting

By Shelly Baskin/AP

Frankfort, KY – The head of the government watchdog group Common Cause of Kentucky is calling for lawmakers to form an independent commission to redraw congressional and legislative district boundaries. Richard Beliles says he believes that would remove political clashes from the process which occurs every 10 years to account for population shifts. Republican Senator David Givens of Greensburg says lawmakers can effectively handle the redistricting process without involving an independent commission. He says lawmakers are making progress on redistricting and should be able to resolve the matter quickly when they convene the 2012 legislative session next month.
