King Louis XII reigned from 1498 to 1515 and was called the "Father of the People," known for leading France through a period of transition (La Guerre folle, aka The Mad War), domestic policy, and the messy Italian War in which he seized and lost and seized again parts of Italy.
Louis ascended the throne upon the death of King Charles VIII. He annulled his marriage with Joan of France to marry Charles' widow, Anne of Brittany. Despite the sloppiness of his Italian conquests, Louis remained popular in France for simplifying the administration of justice, protecting his lowest subjects from oppression, for financing his wars without increasing taxes, and keeping France mostly free from civil war and invasion. He was succeeded by young Francis I, to whom Louis betrothed his daughter Claude of France.
