"Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, lovely Spam! Wonderful Spam!" ...Some of the best lyrics ever written (Monty Python). Spam is a canned precooked meat product by Hormel Foods, introduced on this day in 1937.
Though some might consider it mystery meat, the ingredients are: pork shoulder, ham meat, salt, water, potato starch, sodium nitrate, and an aspic glaze. As of 2007, seven billion cans had been sold. An average of 3.8 cans are consumed every second in the United States. In recent years, Spam has been introduced to international markets. In the UK, you might enjoy a battered and deep-fried "Spam fritter." In Japan, you could get a Spam, rice, seaweed, and egg dish. Or in Israel, a kosher Spam meatloaf might be on the menu. If you ventured up to the Spam Museum in Austin, Minnesota this week, you may find yourself at the annual "Spam Jam" festival.
