On this day in 1917, Congress passed the 18th Amendment establishing the prohibition of alcoholic beverages in the US. While prohibition wasn't fully in effect until 1920, alcohol became difficult to acquire. The 21st amendment repealed the 18th in 1933, though in many parts of the US prohibition is more or less still in effect.
