Charles Dickens captured the Christmas spirit on this day 1843 with the publication of A Christmas Carol, the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. It was an instant critical success, William Makepeace Thackeray called the book, "a national benefit to every man or woman who reads it." My favorite: Athenaeum declared it, "a dainty dish to set before a King."
