Attorneys representing the victims’ families of the 2018 Marshall County High School shooting made their first appearance in Marshall County circuit court Tuesday morning about two seperate civil lawsuits against the school district, the juvenile shooter and the shooter’s family.
Judge Jamie Jameson heard both cases at the same time.
Sheila Hiestand is a Louisville-based attorney who represents the families of Bailey Holt, Gage Smock, Mary Bella James, and Dalton Keeling in one lawsuit. Holt was killed in the shooting while the other three were injured.
Hiestand filed a motion requesting two defendants in the lawsuit be served by a special bailiff because they live outside of Marshall County.
The other lawsuit was filed by the family of Preston Cope, who appeared in court. The attorney for Cope’s family was not present.
Judge Jameson said because the alleged shooter, Gabe Parker, is a juvenile he’ll need to be appointed counsel. He said the plaintiffs may have to pay for it.
Jameson did not set a next court date for the civil suits.
