[Audio] Marcella's Kitchen Kicks Off Marshall Co. Empty Bowls Project, Nov. 6

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

Marcella Perkins opened the kitchen in May 2011 to feed the hungry of Marshall County. Since then, she and her volunteers have served over 62,000 meals, five days a week. Marcella and Dana Spiers stop by Sounds Good to speak with Tracy Ross about the Empty Bowls Project kicking off with a Paint-a-Thon and Chili Dinner on November 6.

Marcella Perkins worked in the community kitchen in Paducah and felt during that time that Marshall County also needed that service. When bringing it in front of the community, she says the first night was standing room only, with 34 different churches in the area represented. The organization has over 150 volunteers and are recruiting more. To get involved, call Marcella at 270-705-3402.

The Empty Bowls Project in Marshall County kicks off with a Paint-a-Thon and Chili Dinner on November 6th from 6-8 p.m. at Marcella's Kitchen (242 Griggstown Rd, Draffenville) in the Lions Club building. They will be painting ceramic bowls that will then be used at the Empty Bowls Project Dinner on April 23, 2016. The cost for the bowl and the chili dinner is $10 per person at the door.

Beyond this event, they'll host a Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanksgiving Day, from 11 to 1, and a Christmas party on Wednesday, December 23 (also from 11 to 1). Everyone gets a gift from the Kitchen, a bag of groceries and fresh fruit. Recently, they've had a larger attendance and more children than in years past.
