On Sounds Good, Murray State University International Students Stacey Pamela Medal Campos and Romel David Awna Lopez speak with Matt Markgraf about their homes in Nicaragua and their experiences at Murray State.
Campos and Lopez were enrolled in the English as a Second Language program for two months to improve their English and returned home March 18. Campos is studying to be a dentist. She says there are not many dentists in Nicaragua and few people go to the dentist because dental care is unaffordable. Lopez is studying education, which is also inaccessibly expensive. Without higher education, Lopez says there are almost no opportunities to find a well-paying job in Nicaragua. Both students plan to conduct service projects when they return home in order to share their knowledge and give back to their communities.
For fun back home, Campos and Lopez say young Nicaraguans like to play baseball and soccer as well as skateboard and bike. Highlights of the country include it’s many volcanoes, which attract tourists, and nacatamal, a corn-based dish including pork, tomatoes, potatoes, and sometimes rice and other ingredients.
