Austin Peay State University is launching a pilot program aimed at giving autistic students more support.
The Full Spectrum Learning program is modeled from a similar program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Enrolled students receive tutoring, peer mentoring, life coaching and support from FSL staff.
APSU has 24 autistic students registered with disability services. Program developer Dr. Gina Grogan suspects there are four more students for every registered one who are coping in secret. Grogan says the program is designed to help students deal with social and executive functioning as much as with academics.
