Gov. Andy Beshear has authorized the Kentucky State Police to independently investigate the killing of a man in the early hours of Monday morning in Louisville.
Law enforcement officers were clearing the parking lot of a convenience store at 26th and Broadway when shots were fired around 12:15 Monday morning. Both LMPD and the National Guard returned fire, and one man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“It’s been a very difficult four days in Louisville,” LMPD Chief Steve Conrad said in a statement. “What is clear from what we’ve seen – from peaceful protestors to those who have shot at and assaulted officers – is that many people in our community do not trust the police. That’s an issue that’s going to take us a long time to work through. Once again tonight we saw peaceful protest turn to destruction. We moved quickly to disperse crowds.”
In an updated statement sent later Monday morning, Conrad said this crowd was one of the last ones left at that point in the evening. He added that LMPD was interviewing several people of interest and officers will be reviewing “many hours” of body cam video. The coroner has not yet identified the victim.
LMPD is expected to provide updates later Monday.
