Beshear Narrowly Defeats Republican Challenger in Attorney General Race

J. Tyler Franklin/Louisville Public Media

Democrat Andy Beshear has narrowly defeated Republican state Senator Whitney Westerfield to become the state’s next Attorney General. Beshear is the son of Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and is just one of two Democrats to win elections Tuesday night.

“It was a tough night but in the end I think every race is different and voters look at every race about what that person coming into office is going to do. I know the difference for us was that we had priorities that were the priorities of Kentucky families,” Beshear says.

Democratic incumbent Allison Lundergan Grimes defeated Republican Steve Knipper to retain her seat as Secretary of State. In the night’s most shocking upset, state Representative Mike Harmon defeated incumbent Adam Edelen for Kentucky state Auditor. Republican Ryan Quarles will be the state’s next Agriculture Commissioner and Republican Allison Ball will be the state’s next Treasurer.
