The city of Bowling Green will award 400-thousand-dollars in grants for exterior improvements to private properties under a program that launched this week.
The federal funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development will be divided into five-thousand-dollar grants.
The property must be in the designated project area.
Brent Childers is director of neighborhood and community services for the city of Bowling Green. He says the funding requires that each proposal undergo a historic review.
“Pretty much every property is going to have to be reviewed in Frankfort," Childers said. "So we’re going to have to see what is the improvement proposed, send it off to them, get their blessing and then the person can start the project. So you can’t do anything until you get an approval letter from us.”
The exterior projects include upgrades like painting or new doors and windows.
This is the first of several neighborhood improvement projects that will award grants to property owners.
The funding will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, until the money runs out.
