Commission Seeks Public Comment on Removal of Jefferson Davis Statue

Wikimedia Commons, Public Domain

The public is being invited to comment about moving the statue of Jefferson Davis from the State Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort to a nearby history center. The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights is encouraging the public to attend a meeting of the Kentucky Historic Properties Advisory Commission on August 5, and to comment on the removal by July 29th. On Sounds Good, Kate Lochte speaks with Commissioner Timothy Thomas of Madisonville.

Carved from Tennessee marble by Frederick Cleveland Hibbard, a Missouri-born, School of the Art Institute of Chicago-trained sculptor, the statue of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, in the State Capitol Rotunda was financed through private donations and a $5,000 appropriation by the State in 1934. Governor "Happy" Chandler accepted the completed statue in 1936.

Timothy Thomas of Madisonville serves as a Commissioner of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights. To add your comment about the removal of the statue of Jefferson Davis from the Kentucky State Capitol Rotunda, go to historicproperties.ky.gov and click on the link in the box Public Comment by July 29th. The open meeting of the Kentucky Historic Properties Advisory Commission is Wednesday, August 5 at 1 p.m. at the Berry Hill Mansion in Frankfort.
