A former deputy jailer in Graves County is facing charges of promoting contraband after an investigation by local law enforcement.
Graves County Jailer George Workman told WKMS 22-year-old Darian Smith of Metropolis, IL is facing two counts of second-degree promoting contraband after an initial inquiry by internal affairs investigators at the jail. Workman said Smith began working as a deputy jailer in November before the beginning of the investigation in mid-December. He said Smith admitted to bringing tobacco and vape juice into the jail on two separate occasions and supplying them to inmates.
“We brought him in, talked to him and he was up-front about it,” Workman said.
Workman in a Tuesday press release said he hopes the arrest helps the community to maintain trust in their justice system.
“We hope that the citizens of Graves County understand that we will not tolerate such actions by deputies of this agency and will investigate to the fullest extent any such complaints,” Workman said. “We would like to thank our internal affairs investigators, Graves County Sheriff's Office and Graves County Attorney John Cunningham for all their assistance in this matter.”
