Western Kentucky has received a $1 million donation from former Hilltopper football player Joe Micatrotto and his wife Sunshine and school officials say it's the largest gift from an ex-student athlete.

The donation includes support for WKU's football and volleyball programs, its Opportunity Fund and capital projects. Micatrotto played at WKU from 1993-97 after transferring from Kent State and graduated with a degree in hotel, restaurant and tourism. He works in the hospitality field in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Micatrotto said in a release Monday that the couple dreamed of making a significant gift to WKU, where both are members of the alumni association. He says with state budget cuts, "We saw it as a great time to be able to touch academics and sports."
