GOP Lawmaker, Wife Cited As Reason Judge Quit After 9 Days

Official Headshot, Public Domain

A former Tennessee judge says the meddling of a Republican lawmaker and his wife was the reason she resigned from a top judicial appointment just nine days after taking over the position.

Gov. Bill Lee appointed Huntingdon attorney Jennifer King on Sept. 4 to fill a chancery court vacancy. On Sept. 13, King wrote to Lee saying accepting the appointment was one of the "worst decisions" of her life.

King says Rep. Bruce Griffey and his wife, Rebecca, worked with GOP county officials to ensure King would not be the party's chancery nominee in the 2020 election and broke party bylaws to do so.

Rebecca Griffey had applied for the chancery position, but wasn't selected as a top nominee.

The Republican lawmaker said he would have a statement on Monday.
