Governor Steve Beshear and his wife, Jane, will head to England this week. Beshear says the United Kingdom sends the most overseas travelers to the Commonwealth.
”This is not about economic development in terms of bringing new companies to Kentucky. But, it is economic development in terms of bringing tourists to Kentucky because as more folks come, they spend their money right here in Kentucky,” said Beshear.
The Governor says the United Kingdom is fertile ground for tourist interests in Kentucky's equine industry. He says he plans to ‘talk up’ the Breeder’s Cup happening in Lexington this fall and the recent Triple Crown Winner. “There’s no better time to be talking about horse racing and attracting people to come and see our horse racing than right now,” said Beshear.
Beshear also says many travelers from overseas come here to hike, fish, or visit the cave system, or mountains. Beshear will meet with journalists and others to promote the state’s $13.1 billion industry. The state’s tourism arts and heritage cabinet reports the Governor will visit Ascot Racecourse during the trip. The Beshears arrive in England on Wednesday and return Sunday, June 21.
